Scientists and surgeons from Emory University, the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania are working on a project that uses nanotechnology to assist in the identification and removal of cancer cells. Background In a new NCI-funded study, researchers will be merging nanotechnology and cancer surgery techniques with the aim of finding tumor cells present in pancreatic, lung and breast cancers. Nanoparticles are injected into the body, where they home in on tumor cells and bind with them. The tumors, including tumor margins and lymph nodes, which may also be involved, can be scanned by surgeons using special equipment, so that every cell can be identified and removed. Complete removal of cancer is often key to preventing recurrence. BEST VIEWED IN HIGH DEFINITION Enigmatic, surreal, but hopefully entertaining – A visual exploration of the promise and challenge of nanotechnology. View a version complete with commentary at www.youtube.com (Based on a number of presentations given over the past couple of years, this is really an excuse to play around with Keynote on the Mac).
